John G. Popken, well known Craig resident, died today, October 18, at the Lutheran hospital in Sioux City, at the age of 65 years. He had been ailing for about nine months.
John Popken was born on Sept. 28, 1886, in Grant Twp. He farmed on the farm he was born until retiring to Craig in 1937 where he had since made his home, engaging in the carpenter trade. On April 27,1911, he was married to Katherine Janssen in Reading Twp. Sioux Co.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and a member of the American Lutheran church of Craig and its brotherhood.
Surviving, is his wife, Katherine of Craig; four daughters, Mrs. Henry (Amanda) Oltmanns of Struble, Mrs. Roy (Esther) Janssen of Worthington,Minn., Mrs. Harry (Mathilda) Johnson of Struble, and Miss Norma Popken at home; 16 grandchildren, and one brother, G. W. Popken
of Craig.He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon, October 21, at two o'clock at St. John's American Lutheran church in Craig. Rev. W. K.
