Sharon A. Jonas, 58, of Remsen, died Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a five month battle with cancer and respiratory complications.
Sharon was born Dec. 13, 1951, at Lutheran Hospital in Sioux City, the daughter of Earl Fremont Riediger and Marvel Elise (Schulz) Riediger. She was raised in the Hinton area and graduated from Hinton Community School in 1970. She attended University of Iowa in the College of Nursing and graduated in May of 1974 with a bachelor of science in nursing. Sharon worked at the University of Iowa Hospitals for three years. She returned to Hinton and began working for St. Joseph's Hospital in Sioux City and caring for her ailing father.
On Aug. 18, 1978, she married Jeff Jonas at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. Sharon and Jeff lived and farmed north of Remsen and she continued to work at now Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City. She worked there for 32 years and raised five children.
She contributed to her community as St. Mary's school nurse, a member of St. Mary's school board, Catholic Daughters, Oktoberfest committee and St. Mary's football medical responder, amongst others. Some of her hobbies included gardening, genealogy, mystery books and films, traveling, arts and crafts.
Survivors include her husband Jeff Jonas of Remsen; son Steve Jonas and his wife Nicole of Boone; daughter Audra Jonas of Merriam, Kan.; son Rusty Jonas and his wife Adrienne of St. Louis Park, Minn.; daughter Amber (Jonas) Waldschmitt and her husband Luke of Remsen; daughter Angela Jonas of Iowa City; grandchildren; Claire and Gabriel Jonas of Boone; one sister Brenda Newberg of Sioux City; brother Randy Riediger and his wife Cindy of Hinton; brother Terry Riediger and his wife Leslie of Lawton; mother-in-law Dorothy Jonas of Remsen; five sisters-in-law, Debbie Boccumini and her husband, Victor of Orlando, Fla., Andrea Mai of Orange City, Mary Stene and her husband Jim of Lenexa, Kan., Becky Engel and her husband Matt of Coto de Caza, Calif., Nikki Schnepf and her husband Brian of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; One brother-in-law, Matt Jonas of Remsen, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and father-in-law, Pete Jonas Jr.
Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 4 p.m. Sunday. There will be a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. Services have been entrusted to Fisch Funeral Home & Monument of Remsen.
Casketbearers will be Steven and Rusty Jonas, Patrick Mai, Blake Riediger, Corey Newberg, Riley Riediger.
