Longtime Le Mars area resident, Doris Zimmerman, died February 7, 2010 of natural causes at her home in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Born Doris Lorraine Wells on September 2, 1920 in Le Mars, Doris married Roderick Eyres in 1941, a marriage that produced three children. In 1970, Roderick died in a farm accident, and six years later, she married Richard Zimmerman, who died in November 2009.

In addition to her duties as a farm wife and mother, Doris was involved in community activities. Her greatest love was the Union Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school and Bible School, and served as an elder. She also found time to be a member of Eastern Star and serve as longtime president of the Plymouth County Women’s Farm Bureau. Along with her husband, Richard, she was an avid supporter of the Plymouth County Museum.

An amateur genealogist, Doris insured that family members were well versed in the family’s history by relating stories and collecting photographs. Several of the photographs on display at the Le Mars Wells Blue Bunny Welcome Center came from her impressive collection.

Doris also loved the Plymouth County Fair, where she won numerous ribbons for her entries. More important, later in her life the fair became an incentive for family members to return to Le Mars to take her.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents and a younger sister. Her survivors include James Eyres and his wife, Shirley, of West Point, Iowa; Christina Sales and her husband, Jeffry, of Waterloo; Mary Ann Eyres of Waterloo; Dennis Zimmerman and his wife, Vicky, of Duluth, Minnesota; eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

In accordance with her wishes, Doris’s remains have been sent to the University of South Dakota School of Medicine. Pastor Jan Christensen of the Presbyterian United Church of Christ in Le Mars will officiate a Celebration of Life Service at 10:30 am on Saturday, February 20. The Carlsen Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
