Lyle Ray Stinton, 69, longtime teacher and coach, went home to his Heavenly Father Monday, Feb. 8, 2010.
Lyle Ray Stinton was born on the family farm in Washington Township Oct. 23, 1940, the son of Mainard Ira and Vera Margaret (Hartter) Stinton. Lyle was baptized and confirmed at the Evangelical Reformed Church in Le Mars.
He received his education in the Le Mars Community Schools and Westmar College. During his college years, he drove a school bus for the Le Mars Community Schools.
He was a radio announcer at KLEM radio station for seven years. He completed graduate work at Iowa State, University of Northern Iowa (UNI), Morningside, Western State College and the University of Wyoming.
Lyle's 41 years of teaching and coaching took him to the schools of George Community, Turkey Valley in Jackson Junction and back to his alma mater, Le Mars Community in the Trades and Industries Department.
In addition to coaching wrestling, he also coached football and track. Lyle retired from his love of teaching and coaching in 2006.
A few of the honors bestowed on Lyle were District Assistant Coach of the Year Award nine times, State Assistant Coach of the Year Award three times, recognition for his 30 years as a football coach and for his 38 years as a wrestling official. He was the assistant wrestling coach to Tom Smalley at Le Mars Community and to Jim Arjes at Turkey Valley, who is a member of the National Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame.
Lyle was a member of the United Methodist Church of Le Mars, the Iowa State Education Association, Kiwanis, the National Education Association, the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, and the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association.
Lyle played in the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corp Wasmer Post 241 for seven years.
Through his carpentry, electrical, welding and mechanical skills, Lyle touched many lives. He enjoyed helping others and was often observed sitting at a table sketching out ideas for projects.
He loved life and believed one needed to have fun times as witnessed by friends, co-workers, and students through his teasing.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Sheilah (Smith Puetz) Stinton; children, Doug and wife Autumn (Boyet) Stinton of Omaha, Neb., Karen Stinton of San Francisco, Calif., Toni Stinton of San Francisco, Calif., Curtis and his wife Mary (Morgan) Puetz of Sioux Center, and Crisinda Puetz of Cincinnati, Ohio; a cousin, Lynn Hartter of Le Mars; brothers-in-law, Jerry Kneip of Le Mars, Emory and Norma (Andres) Smith of Fort Bragg, Calif., Stuart and Colleen (Nipp) Smith of Cherokee; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Loree Kneip, and parents-in-law, Reuben and Winetta (Locke) Smith.
A celebration of Lyle's life will take place at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars (901 Third Ave. S.E.). The Rev. Jason Larson will officiate. Interment will occur at a later date at Rosehill Cemetery in Parker, S.D. Visitation with the family will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars.
The family requests memorials to the United Methodist Church of Le Mars, Hospice of Siouxland, and the Oncology Department of Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
