John Joseph Nipp, 76, of Bellflower, Calif., and formerly of the Le Mars area, died Monday, Feb. 8, 2010, at the Lakewood Regional Medical Center in Lakewood, Calif.
John Joseph Nipp was born May 17, 1933, in Irene, S.D., the son of John and Anna (Buckley) Nipp. The family later moved to a farm north of Le Mars where Johnny attended country school. They later moved east of Struble, and he attended school in Struble. Johnny continued his education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Le Mars. Johnny enjoyed life on the farm and helping his parents with the operation.
Johnny moved to California in 1958 and worked as a cattle feeder for the California Cotton Seed Company, a job he loved. After the company moved elsewhere, he was employed with the Newton Insert Co. and was involved in metal plating until his retirement.
Johnny had a Model A roadster that was always in perfect condition. He enjoyed visiting his brother Bernard and giving the nieces and nephew and neighbor kids rides in the rumble seat, an experience they still talk about.
He always looked forward to the fall when he would return to the family farm south of Merrill. He loved helping his parents and neighbors with the harvest.
Johnny was an avid reader and his family kept him supplied with books. He spent his last years in the Woodruff Nursing Home in Bellflower, Calif.
Johnny will be lovingly remembered by his sister Colleen Smith and her husband Stuart of Cherokee; brothers Bob Nipp and his wife Andree of Falls Church, Va., Bernard Nipp and his wife Peg of Downey, Calif., Don Nipp and his wife Dorothy of Merrill; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Eunice Nipp; and brothers Tom and Ray.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill. The Rev. Daniel Greving will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at the parish cemetery. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church. The Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
