John J. Winterfeld, one of Rock Valley’s oldest residents, died at his home here Monday morning, June 9, at the age of 89 years, 10 months and 6 days. Funeral services were held at the home in Rock Valley at one o’clock and two o’clock at the Peace Lutheran church with Rev. C. J. Rebelein officiating. Interment was made in the churchyard cemetery.

John J. Winterfeld was born in Clayton County, Iowa, August 3, 1862 and came at early age to neighboring Plymouth county. He married Emma Baack, April 6, 1888. Following their marriage they farmed eight miles north of Ireton for 52 years and retired about 12 years ago when they moved to Rock Valley where they have since resided.

Fourteen children were born to this couple, 7 boys and 7 girls, one son Albert died in 1940.

Six sons are George, Julius, and Ernest of Forest Grove, Oregon; Charles of Rock Rapids, Emil of Sioux Center, and John of Verndale, Minnesota.; the seven daughters are Mrs. R.A. Hamann, Clear Lake, South Dakota; Mrs. Henry Rockman of Marshall, Minnesota; Mrs. Charles Klohs of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Mrs. August Groth and Mrs. Herman Vogel of Pipestone, Minnesota; Mrs. Arthur Gray, Sioux Falls, and Mrs. John C. Landhuis of Rock Valley. He is also survived by two brothers, Albert and Louis of Craig and two sister, Mrs. Arne Lendt and Mrs. Charles Anderson of Marcus, Iowa.
