Mrs. Popken Dies at Hospital Here
Funeral services for Mrs. Gerd W. Popken, 83, of Craig who died Sunday, (January 12, 1964) at the Hawarden hospital after an illness of several months, were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran church at Craig. Rev. Ervin B. Schemmel officiated with burial in the Lutheran cemetery at Craig.
Mrs. Popken, the former Johanna Miniets, was born near Hanover, Germany, February 6, 1880. She came to the United States with her brother, John Miniets, in 1900 and lived in eastern Iowa before going to Coleridge, Nebraska, where she resided until 1906.
She married Gerd Popken April 1, 1906, near LeMars and they farmed near Craig until 1940 when they retired and moved to town. He died in 1957 at Craig. Survivors include two sons, George and Ernest, both of LeMars; three daughters, Mrs. Onno Johnson of Craig, Mrs. Adeline Janssen of Ireton and Mrs. Elmer Rohlfs of LeMars; a brother John Miniets of Craig; 22 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren
