Tommy O. Rice, 63, of Sioux City, Iowa, formerly of rural Akron, Iowa, passed away unexpectedly Friday, November 6, 2009 near Denison, Iowa.

Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Union Creek Lutheran Church, rural Akron, Iowa. Pastor Carla Nelson will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Hoschler American Legion Post 186 of Akron. A time of visitation and fellowship will follow the service in the church basement. The Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron, Iowa is in charge of arrangements.

Tommy O. Rice was born October 9, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Jay and Esther (Wolf) Rice. He was raised near La Porte City, Iowa. On October 14, 1963, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served his country during the Vietnam Conflict. He was honorably discharged on November 24, 1969.

He returned to the La Porte City area. He was united in marriage to Diane Mether on October 3, 1975. Tommy was an owner/operator of his own trucking business. He has been in the transportation business for over 35 years. In 1981, he and Diane moved to Sioux City. In 1984, they moved near Akron in South Dakota and later east of Akron. In 2006, they moved back to Sioux City.

Tommy was a member of Union Creek Lutheran Church. He enjoyed fishing and restoring antique cars. He loved the times spent with his family, especially being a “Papa” to his grandchildren. Tommy will be greatly missed by his family and kept in their hearts forever.

Survivors include his wife of over 34 years, Diane of Sioux City, IA; 2 daughters: Amy Stenvold and her husband Jeremy of Minot, ND, and Leanne Slaymaker and her husband Dan of Marengo, IA; 2 sons: Tommy T. Rice and his wife Julie of rural Hinton, IA, and Travic Rice of Sioux City, IA; 8 grandchildren; and 2 brothers: John Rice and Cleo Rice of Waterloo, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister: Nonny McKinley.
