Donald M. Galles, 62, of Remsen, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer.

Don was born Dec. 7, 1946, at Le Mars, the son of Milton and Arlene (Konz) Galles. He was raised and educated in Remsen. He attended St. Mary Catholic School at Remsen, graduating from St. Mary High School in 1965.

Don entered the U. S. Army National Guard on June 19, 1965, serving in the 133rd Infantry and in the Vietnam War in 1969. Don received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action May 27, 1969, in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged April 22, 1971. Don then returned home to Remsen to farm with his father and brother.

Don was proud to be a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, American Legion, V.F.W Color Guard and Sportsman's Club all of Remsen.

He enjoyed fishing with his nieces, nephews and friends, playing pinochle, attending dances and spending time with friends and family.

Survivors include: His mother Arlene Galles of Remsen; one brother, Dale Galles and his wife Rose of Marcus; seven sisters, Mary Block and her husband Pete of Sioux City, Marilyn Bunkers and her husband Terry of Remsen, Audrey Weiler and her husband Gilbert Jr. of Le Mars, Carol Christoffel and her husband Gary of Granville, Bonnie Meyer and her husband Stan of Ireton, Laurie Schroeder and her husband Alan of Granville, and Karen Portz and her husband Randy of Remsen; 42 nieces and nephews, as well as several great-nieces and nephews, numerous cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father Milton; paternal grandparents, Mike and Anna (Schneiders) Galles; maternal grandparents Joseph and Emma (Mousel) Konz; two nephews, Dustin Christoffel and Travis James Weiler; and one niece, Angel Bunkers.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Remsen. Graveside military services will be conducted by Post 220 American Legion and Post 3328 V.F.W. of Remsen. Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. today (Monday). There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., and vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home & Monument in Remsen.

Casket Bearers will be Ryan Block, Andrew Portz, Randy Schroeder, Cody Bunkers, David Christoffel, Troy Weiler, Matt Galles and Tyler Meyer.
