Jonathon Learing, 27, of Le Mars, died Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, as a result of injuries suffered in a car accident. Jon's final gift was being an organ donor.

Jon was born July 8, 1982, at Viborg, S.D., the son of Floyd and Ro Shiel (Johns) Learing. Jon was baptized at Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene, S.D. He attended elementary school in both Fort Worth, Texas and Sioux Falls, S.D. Jon graduated high school in 2001 from Remsen Union Community School in Remsen.

Jon then entered the U.S. Air Force on June 6, 2001. Jon served in Iraq for one year. He was honorably discharged March 11, 2004.

Over the years Jon had several jobs including being a correctional officer at Woodbury County Jail. His most recent jobs were Alorica and Red Robin in Sioux City and Hy-Vee in Le Mars.

On Dec. 5, 2006, he married Jane Carlyle at San Antonio, Texas. The couple made their home in Le Mars, shortly after. Their son, Evan James, was born Oct. 10, 2007, and Jon was a very proud father.

Jon's hobbies included hunting, fishing and going to the shooting range, but his favorite past time was just being a good husband, father, son, brother and friend.

Survivors include his wife Jane and son Evan Learing of Le Mars; his parents, Floyd and Ro Shiel Learing of Remsen; one sister, Alicia Learing and her fiancé Matt Peters of Fort Worth, Texas; two brothers, Blaine Learing and his special friend Kelsey Weiler of Le Mars and Wyatt Learing at home in Remsen; two nieces, Mayci and Makenna Learing; his paternal grandmother, Olive Learing of Irene, S.D.; his maternal grandmother, Carol Dahlquist and her husband Harris of Hawarden; his father-in-law, Doug Carlyle and his wife Peggy of Tarpley, Texas; his mother-in-law, Donna Fulton and her husband Jim of Austin, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Megan and Sarah Carlyle of Tarpley, Texas; and numerous uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Ralph Learing; maternal grandfather, Guy Johns; four uncles, Vernon, Robert, Donald Learing and Ronald Goeken; and two cousins, Darrin and Daniel Learing.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Irene, S.D., with the Rev. Craig Miller officiating. Burial will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Irene. Graveside military honors will be conducted by Hall-Thompson Post #193 of Irene, S.D. There will be a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fisch Funeral Home & Monument LLC in Remsen. Visitation will resume from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.
