GRANVILLE, Iowa -- Melvin List, 87, of Granville died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at the Orange City Health System Hospital in Orange City, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Granville with Msgr. Kenneth Seifried officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Granville. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 5 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at the church. Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, Iowa is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. List was born Sept. 30, 1914, in rural Granville, the son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Henrich) List. He was raised in the Granville area and received his education in the rural school system and St. Mary's Academy at Alton, Iowa. He began farming around the age of 12 with his parents near Granville. He married Florence Christoffel on Sept. 24, 1940, at Remsen. They made their home on the family farm near Granville, which they operated until retiring on the farm in 1981. It became a century farm in 1983.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and had served as Grand Knight for several years, Farm Bureau for many years and served as president of the board of directors for Sioux County from 1966 to 1968. He enjoyed music and played the accordion for family and friends. He loved farming and his family. He shared his thoughts and feelings through his weekly article "Square Snide Lines" in the Capital-Democrat. He lovingly tended "List Pond" for many years, creating many fond memories for all.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, James and his wife, Mary Ann, of Le Mars, Iowa, Joseph and his wife, Tami, of Granville, and John of Sheldon, Iowa; 11 daughters, Dorothy and her husband, Ed Porter, Julie Schulte, Barbara and her husband, Ken Kreber, all of Sioux City, Annette and her husband, Marvin Pottebaum, of Remsen, Donna and her husband, James Mai, of Le Mars, Mary and her husband, Roland Hohn, of Wahoo, Neb., Trudi and her husband, J.D. Clemens, of London, England, Cindy and her husband, Mark Klein, of Granville, Pauline and her husband, Pat Jonas, of Palm Bay, Fla., Audrey and her husband, Bill Doolittle, of Newport News, Va., Brenda and her husband, Kevin Bodensteiner of Laingsburg, Mich.; 52 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Edith Delperdeng of Remsen, Esther Reuter of Sauk Center, Minn., Helen and her husband, Lawrence Brady of Marcus, Iowa, and Mildred and her husband, Eldon Ruden of Le Mars; and a brother and his wife, Ray and Charmaine List of Granville.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers-in-law, Gerald Delperdeng and Melvin "Tim" Reuter.

Pallbearers will be Curtis Hohn, Matthew Kreber, Ted List, Matthew Mai, David Pottebaum and Troy Schulte.
