Emory Richard Saienga, 81, of Story City and formerly of Le Mars, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Emory was born Feb. 17, 1928, in Melvin, the son of Richard and Martha (Wiechert) Saienga. After high school he married Helen D. Mauer on Jan. 26, 1946. He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 12, 1946 to Nov. 25, 1947. Together he and Helen farmed near Hinton, until moving to an acreage near Le Mars in 1983. They moved to Story City in 2007. Helen died Nov. 4, 2008.

Emory was a member of the American Legion and was an avid reader. He enjoyed all types of music and watching sports on television, especially basketball and baseball.

He was very interested in the value of education and politics, serving as an election judge in Plymouth County for many years.

Emory is survived by four sons and a daughter; Richard and his wife, Pat, of Largo, Fla., Steven and his wife, Judy, of Lakeville, Minn., Gene and his wife, Peg, of Round Rock, Texas, Scott and his wife, Vicki, of Story City and Susan Jesuroga and her husband, Rich, of Boulder, Colo. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a sister, June Edwards of Chatsworth, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two sisters, Doris Tarkenton and Evelyn Saienga.

Funeral services were held Monday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City. Burial was at noon today (Tuesday) at Baker Township Cemetery near Melvin.

Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City was entrusted with arrangements.
