Beulah R. Gant, 84, of Hawarden, died Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009, at the Hawarden Community Hospital.
Beulah Rae Port was born Jan. 31, 1925, in Howard, S.D., the daughter of Lloyd Melvin Port and Mabel Fay (Noble) Port. She graduated from Akron High School in 1943 where she was a star basketball player including a state qualifier for free throw shooting. Beulah and her beloved twin sister Bonnie moved to Sioux City to work at Palmer Candy Company after high school. The "Port twins" were well known for their friendliness and their deep lasting love for each other.
She was united in marriage to William (Bill) David Gant on April , 1948, in Akron. Beulah and Bill farmed near Westfield and Akron before moving to McNally and then to Hawarden in 1972. Together they had five children.
She was a mother to many, a homemaker and farmer's wife and also worked outside the home. She managed Akron's Eagles Club and Tom's Café in Hawarden for many years. She was well known by patrons for her joke telling and love of laughter.
She loved people and accepted everyone as her own. She saw the good in all. Beulah never forgot a friend and no one forgot her due to her unconditional love. She touched many lives in her 84 years.
She enjoyed bowling well into her 70s, playing cards, good music, having some good laughs, children of all ages, and most of all, spending time with her family.
She was a long time member of the Hawarden Fraternal Order of Eagles Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Akron American Legion Hoschler Unit 186 Auxiliary for more than 60 years. She was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Hawarden.
At the time of death, she lived at Mica Hills Estate Assisted Living, Hawarden, remained extremely active for her age, and especially enjoyed her recent reunion with her old Ireton bowling team.
Survivors include four daughters and their husbands; Sue Yackel-Gant and Ron Yackel of Hawarden and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Mary and Gary Landau of DeWitt, Jean and Dan Ellis of Sioux Center, and Pat and Ralph Gorton of Naples, Fla.; a son, Michael Gant of Hawarden; a brother-in-law, Donald Rice of Sioux City, a sister-in-law, Kathleen Port, of Le Mars; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William David Gant, two sisters, Evelyn Smith and Bonnie Rice; and a brother, Lloyd (Jack) Port.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Mary Catholic Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Roger Linnan officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 4 p.m. today (Monday) at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church. The family will be present before services.
Pallbearers will be Zeke, Eli, and Beau Ellis, Dylan Gorton and Hannah Rae Gorton, Jen Rheingans and Carrie Landau. Honorary pallbearers are great-grandchildren: Emersen Rae, Colton and Jack Rheingans, and Mackenzie Rae Bacha.
