Donald William Ellensohn, 76, a lifelong Le Mars resident, died suddenly Tuesday, July 28, 2009, at his home in Le Mars.
Don was born April 13, 1933 in Le Mars, the son of Eugene and Mary C. (Burkard) Ellensohn. He grew up in Le Mars and graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School in 1951. Don served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War from March 1954 to January 1956. On Feb. 14, 1957, Don married Shirley Kunkel in Remsen. Following their marriage the couple farmed their whole life in the Le Mars area.
Don was a lifetime member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, a member of the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council 1466 and the American Legion, Wasmer Post 241.
Don's passion was farming and raising purebred livestock. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed playing cards with friends and bowling.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years Shirley Ellensohn of Le Mars; three children: Gary Ellensohn and his wife Mary, Lynn Breuer and her husband Steve and Karen Jaminet and her husband Mike, all of Le Mars; nine grandchildren: Aaron, Kyle, Todd and Krista Ellensohn, Nicholas Breuer and his wife Carmen, Kevin Breuer and Angie Breuer, and Amanda and Brittany Jaminet; two great-grandchildren, Desiree and Kaleb Breuer; a brother Ed Ellensohn and his wife Suzanne of Le Mars; his in-laws: Orville and Colleen Kunkel of Remsen, Shirley Elser of Hartley, Marvin Kunkel of Marcus, Janet and Gene Wurth of Remsen and Mary Jo and James Peters of Le Mars; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Eugene and Mary Ellensohn; parents-in-law Felix and Mary Kunkel; and in-laws: Duane Kunkel, Don Elser and Darlene Kunkel.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars with military honors provided by the American Legion, Wasmer Post 125.
Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a Vigil Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., followed immediately by a Knights of Columbus rosary. Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars is assisting Don's family with arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Aaron Ellensohn, Kyle Ellensohn, Todd Ellensohn, Nick Breuer, Kevin Breuer and Mark Ellensohn. Honorary pallbearers will be Krista Ellensohn, Amanda Jaminet, Angie Breuer and Brittany Jaminet.
