Wilbur J. "Bill" Toel, 78, of Sioux City passed away Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with the Rev. Ernest M. Caltvedt officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Toel was born March 4, 1924, in Hinton, Iowa, the son of Fred and Margaret (Scheeff) Toel. He graduated from Hinton High School in 1943. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in the Pacific Theater.

He married Olga J. Running on Sept. 12, 1947, in Sioux City. After returning to Sioux City in 1947, he joined the newly formed military facility of the Iowa Air National Guard in Sioux City. He was a flight line crew chief in the Guard. In 1951, his unit was activated to serve in Korea and, in 1968, his unit was again activated to serve in Vietnam. He retired from the service in 1979.

He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Boys of 68, Masonic Lodge, Eagles, Elks, Missouri River Boat Club and St. John Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Olga of Sioux City; two sons, Ronald Toel of Phoenix, Ariz., and David Toel and his wife, Roxanne of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Karen and Richard Murray of Sioux City; and five grandchildren, Judy Toel, Angela Toel, Jennifer Small, Aaron Murray and Sara Murray.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Louis Toel.

Pallbearers will be Dennis Lines, Mick McCuddin, Kevin Small, Roger Horstmeyer, Larry Horstmeyer and Dennis Toel.
