AN EARLY SETTLER PASSES AWAY

About five o’clock Monday morning, Nov. 12, 1934, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schneider in Plymouth township, Grandmother Emmert passed peacefully into the eternal world. Without a struggle the spirit left the tenement of clay, its home for 90 years, and bade farewell to time, following her husband who died August 23, 1902.

Henrietta Lentz was born in Germany, July 8, 1844. In 1851 at the age of six, she came with her parents to America, settling at Bethlehem, Pa. In 1862 they came to Plymouth County, Iowa, where she had lived ever since. She was married to Peter Emmert in 1862. Since her husband’s death, she has made her home with her son, Phillip, and later with her granddaughter, Mrs. Ed Schneider. About 14 years ago she had the misfortune to break her hip and has suffered somewhat from that accident ever since.

Grandmother, or “Grosmutter Emmert” as her friends have long called her, was loved by everybody and to the end has kept a large circle of friends, who shall always remember her kindly disposition, her active, energetic, helpful life of good deeds and loving neighborliness.

She is survived her son, Phillip Emmert; a granddaughter, Mrs. Ed Schneider; and a great grandson, Lowell Schneider.

The funeral was Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 at the Melbourne Evangelical church, the pastor Rev. L.J.U. Smay being assisted by Rev. Karl Kaupp of the Stanton Evangelical church, a former pastor. Music was by Allen Schindel, Wm. H. Brehm, Ralph Brehm, and J. LeRoy Smay, accompanied by Mrs. Allen Schindel. Pallbearers, Chris Schneider, Jake Berner, W.O. Bogenrief, Wm. Schindel, H.H. Schindel, and Geo. F. Spies.

Tenderly we laid her body to rest in the Floyd Cemetery but the spirit had returned to God who gave it. For 72 years Mother Emmert dwelt in Plymouth County, ever brightening her corner, enduring the hardships of the early Plymouth days, enjoying our prosperity, rejoicing in our progress, industrious, frugal, typical wife, mother, grandmother and friend. We all rejoice to have known her, and we all sympathize with the bereft. ~Rev. L.J.U. Smay
