Funeral Wednesday for Florentine Mai

Mrs. Nick (Florentine) Mai, 77, of New Hampton, Iowa, died Monday, May 13 at St. Joseph’s Community Hospital in New Hampton after an illness of several days.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 Wednesday, May 15 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church here. Msgr. F. P. Schultes officiated and burial was in the parish cemetery.

The former Florentine Arens, was born October 23, 1896 at Remsen, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Arens. (Mrs. Arens was Elizabeth Knewel) Her marriage to Nick Mai took place Nov. 21, 1919 at Remsen. Mr. Mai died on October 20, 1950. Mrs. Mai had made her home in New Hampton since 1962.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Surviving are two sons, Donald of New Hampton, Iowa and Glenn of Encino, Cal,; two daughters, Mrs. Merrill (Edna) Clark of San Bernardino, Cal., and Mrs. Walter (Lola) Johnson of Westside, Iowa; 26 grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Ed (Lee)Even and Mrs. Mildred Schorg of LeMars, Iowa and Mrs. Martha Gamerdinger of Long Beach, California.

She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and one sister.

Casket bearers were grandsons, Thomas, Ronald and Russel Johnson and Dean, Charles and Donald Jr., Mai. The Fisch funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
