LE MARS, Iowa -- Brian D. Rolling, 40, of Lodge Grass, Mont., formerly of Le Mars, died unexpectedly Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003, at the Flat Iron Unit of the Sunlight Basin Ranch near Lodge Grass.

Memorial services will be 7 p.m. today at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Richard Ries officiating. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. today in St. Catherine's Catholic Cemetery, Oyens, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Wasmer Post 241. Visitation will be 3 p.m. until service time today at the funeral home.

Brian Douglas Rolling was born July 20, 1963, in Lawton, Okla., the son of Jerry and Eilene (Yates) Rolling. He was raised on the family farm in Marian Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. He attended St. Catherine's Elementary School in Oyens and graduated in 1981 from Le Mars Community High School. He continued his education at South Dakota State University in Brookings and Chadron State College in Chadron, Neb. He served in the U.S. Army from 1984 to 1988. He was a Green Beret with the Army Special Forces. Since that time he had worked on various ranches in most of the western states as a cowboy, with the exception of one year that he worked with a company that erected communication towers.

He had been a member of 4-H in his earlier years and the Future Farmers of America during high school. He also was a member of the National Rifle Association, Tri-State Roping Club, Northwest Iowa Horse Association and Rendezvous.

He was a professional cowboy and loved the open spaces of the Wild West. He enjoyed working with horses and was an accomplished farrier. He was also quite talented at writing poetry and had some of his works published. He was an avid outsdoorsman, who enjoyed fly fishing, hunting and climbing mountains. Family and friends were very important to him.

Survivors include his parents, Jerry and Eilene Rolling of Le Mars; seven siblings, Alan Rolling and his wife, Cheryl, of Le Mars, Doug Rolling of Kissimmee, Fla., Jeff Rolling of Le Mars, Sue Jacobson, Bruce Rolling and his wife, Heather, and Teresa and her husband, Dale Manning, all of Merrill, Iowa, and Julie Rolling and her husband, Jared Leising, of Seattle, Wash.; nieces and nephews, Nick and Kari Rolling, Jessica, Arturo, Tyler and Kyle Rolling, Tony and Tanya Jacobson, Josh and Britney Rolling and J.D. and Ethan Manning; several aunts and uncles; and his faithful dog, Snuff.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and a sister, Brenda Lee in childhood.
