AKRON, Iowa -- Phyllis Marie Root, 85, of Akron died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, in Vermillion, S.D. care center.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron, with the Rev. Brook McBride officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Phyllis Marie Root was born March 8, 1917, in Westfield, Iowa, the daughter of William and Margie (Hall) Seyler. She attended Westfield Grade School and high school, graduating in 1934.
She married Robert V. Root on Feb. 4, 1936, in Akron. She was a homemaker. The couple farmed in Union County, S.D., until retiring in 1975 and moved to Akron. They wintered in Harlingen, Texas. In her free time, she enjoyed playing cards, vegetable and flower gardening, spending time with her family and friends and working crossword puzzles.
She was a charter member of Sioux Valley Extension Club in Union County, S.D. She enjoyed ballroom and square dancing.
Survivors include her husband, Robert V. Root of Vermillion; four children, Marilyn and her husband, Verne Heeren of Akron, Richard Root and his wife, Rosemary, of Akron, Beverly Donily of Portland, Ore., and Julie and her husband, Tom Nason, of Elk Point, S.D.; two sisters, Kathryn Hilbink of Holland, Mich., and Gertrude Conley of California; a brother, William Seyler of Holland, Mich.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Maxine Emmick; a granddaughter, Sheryl Heeren; and a great-granddaughter, Alexa Marie Tarrell.
