Viola M. Newman, 92, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kenny Hsu officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home.

Mrs. Newman was born Aug. 20, 1911, in rural Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Minnie (Marineau) Petersen.

She married Curtis G. Newman on April 5, 1933, in Sioux City. He died Dec. 21, 1992, in Sioux City.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Lutheran Service Auxiliary. She enjoyed gardening and traveling. She also enjoyed helping the elderly, however, loving her family was her number one priority.

Survivors include two sons, Merlyn Newman and his wife, Charlene of Viroqua, Wis., and Ralph Newman of Piedmont, S.D.; two daughters, Joan Koch and her husband, Stan of Rochester, Minn., and Doris Sherrill of Sioux City; a sister, Leona Larson of rural Sioux City; 11 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis; three brothers, Clarence, Kenneth and Edwin; and a son-in-law, Berle Sherrill.

Pallbearers will be Rick, Bret, Jeff, Dan and Mike Newman, Roger Sherrill and alternate Mike Hanna.
