George Charles Newman, 83, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Burial will be in Spirit Lake Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake.

George was born Oct. 1, 1920, in Plymouth County, Iowa, to George and Dolly Newman. He married Lucille Garland on April 14, 1943, while serving with the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He served stateside and in the Mariana Islands and Guam.

Upon returning to Iowa, he resided in Sioux City and worked in the sheet metal trade for 20 years before moving to Vermillion, S.D. He then owned Newman Heating and A/C in 1965. In 1974, the couple retired to the Lakes Area and he worked part-time for Lakes Plumbing, Heating and Cooling, until he moved into Wel-Life in 2003.

He is survived by a daughter and her husband, Janet and Gary Nobbe of Rockwell City, Iowa; a son and his wife, Ronald and Jeanette Newman of Okoboji, Iowa; grandsons, Matt and Jeremy Newman; granddaughters and their husbands, Heather (Nobbe) and Loren Pesicka and Joey (Newman) and Will Paterson; four great-granddaughters; a great-grandson; a sister, Maxine Nissen; a brother-in-law, Donald Schnieder; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers; and two sisters.
