LE MARS, Iowa -- Clara W. Nussbaum, 93, a lifelong Plymouth County resident passed away Monday, May 2, 2005, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
Clara Wilhelmina Westhoff was born March 4, 1912, on a farm in Grant Township, Plymouth County, to Gerd and Wilhelmina (Acker) Westhoff. She was baptized on March 17, 1912. She began her education at a country school near her home and completed her schooling at Christ Lutheran Parochial School in Grant Township. She cared for her invalid mother for 34 years following her education.
She married John Von Hagel on April 18, 1945. John passed away Aug. 17, 1949. On Feb. 14, 1951, she married George E. Nussbaum at St. John's American Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The couple made their home in Elgin Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, where they farmed. During these years, her sister-in-law, Emma passed away suddenly. The couple helped to raise their niece and nephew, Glenda and Wilbur Westhoff. In 1974, they retired and moved into Le Mars. George passed away Nov. 30, 1983. She remained in her home until moving to Plymouth Manor Care Center on Jan. 7, 2002.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son and his wife, Gene and Lorie of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Joan and Dennis Schuette of Brandon, S.D.; a granddaughter and her husband, Crystal and Rick Steuerwald and their son, Chase of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a granddaughter, Jennifer Nussbaum of Le Mars; and a grandson, Scott Nussbaum serving overseas in Iraq with the U.S. Army.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, John and George; and a brother, George Westhoff.
