CLIVE, Iowa -- Sylvester Nicholas Nemmers, 85 of Clive died Saturday, July 16, 2005 at the Sunnyview Care Center in Ankeny, Iowa.
Services will be 10 a.m., Wednesday at St. Augustin Catholic Church, Des Moines, Iowa. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m., Tuesday at Dunn's Funeral Home where a vigil and rosary will begin at 5 p.m.
Sylvester was born the son of Anna (Knewel) and Nicholas Nemmers on June 18, 1920 in Le Mars, Iowa. He lived in Sioux City where he worked for KSCJ as a radio engineer and also operated his own radio and television repair company.
In 1965 he moved to Des Moines where he operated several vending services, most recently the Hoover Building Vending Services until he retired in 1991. Sylvester was a member of St. Augustin Catholic Church, IBEW Local 49, Des Moines Chapter Iowa Council of the United Blind, American Council of the Blind and the Randolph Shepard Venders of America. He was also past president of the Iowa Council of the Blind.
Sylvester was also involved with amateur radio. His call letter was W0MHC and he was a member of the Sioux City and Des Moines Amateur Radio Associations and was an avid listener of big band music.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Clive; children Theresa White of Indianola, Paul Nemmers of Prairie City, Mark Nemmers of Urbandale, Angela Nemmers of Des Moines, Julie Slater of Ankeny, Cass Nemmers of Des Moines and Sylvia Nemmers of Las Cruces, N.M.; 23 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Jean (Cass); grandchildren Jessica and Caroline; brother, Rev. Reinhard Nemmers of Le Mars and sister Elizabeth Vollmar of Colorado Springs, Colo.
