Clarence Langel, 88, of Alton, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, at Heritage House Nursing Home at Orange City.

Clarence Langel was born Nov. 6, 1920, at rural Le Mars, the son of Leo T. and Pauline (Rolfes) Langel.

Clarence was raised in the Le Mars area and received his education at St. Joseph Catholic School in Le Mars. He was then a farm laborer in the Le Mars area. On Nov. 27, 1945 he married Julianna Minten at Alton where they made their home.

On Jan. 22, 1946 he entered the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the state of Virginia. He was honorably discharged Oct. 7, 1946, and returned to Alton. In 1947 the couple moved to near Le Mars where they farmed. In 1948 they moved to near Alton where they farmed until retiring on the farm in 1984. Julianna died April 6, 2008. Clarence had been a resident of Heritage House since Aug. 5, 2008.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary Rosary Society and Floyd Post 200 American Legion, all of Alton. His faith was very important to him. He enjoyed farming and after his retirement helping his son Jerry on the farm, playing cards and in his earlier years bowling.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Dennis and Cathy and Gerald "Jerry" and Linda, all of Alton; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, Jennifer Langel and her son, Cody, of Alton, Kimberly and her husband Dave Klock and their sons, Kaleb and Jeffrey, of Chancellor, S.D., Kevin and his wife Kathryn and their two children, Mckenna and Dylan, of Kansas City, Mo., Krissa Langel of Waukee; three brothers, Leonard, Roman and his wife Millie, Marvin and his wife Joyce, all Le Mars; three sisters and their husbands, Viola and LeRoy Kellen of Le Mars, Bernice and Richard Tierney of Roscoe, Ill., and Mary Lou and Leonard Straub of Fort Collins, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Harriet Langel of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Judith Langel; three brothers, Donald and Richard and one in infancy; one sister in infancy; and two sisters-in-law, Clarice Langel and Ardis Langel.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Alton with the Rev. Paul Eisele celebrating and the Rev. James Tigges concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Alton with graveside military honors conducted by American Legion Floyd Post 200.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. today (Monday) at St. Mary Catholic Church in Alton, where there will be a rosary at 5 p.m. by St. Mary Rosary Society and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m.

Fisch Funeral Home and Monument of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers will be David, Douglas and Leo Langel, Ronald Minten, Robert Kinney and Orville Von Arb.
