KINGSLEY, Iowa -- Harry J. Mahrt, 89, of Kingsley died unexpectedly Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley, with the Rev. Duane Miesner of First Lutheran Church in Kingsley officiating. Burial will be in Kingsley Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Harry was born Sept. 11, 1913, in rural Pierson, Iowa, the son of George P. and Anna C. (Simonsen) Mahrt. He grew up in the Pierson area.

He married Jenny June Hodgen on Sept. 21, 1937. The couple had a son, Terry, who was born May 31, 1938. They lived in the Kingsley area. He worked with his brother, Bill, and ran produce a few years, before he went to work for the Plymouth County Road Department. He operated a road grader/maintainer for 20 years before retiring. After his retirement, the couple continued to live in Kingsley. His wife, Jenny, passed away March 18, 1997.

He was an avid card player, he was part of a group of retired farmers and businessmen who played cards every day at a designated location in Kingsley. He also enjoyed spending time and doing various activities with his four grandchildren, Todd, Tim, Tami and Travis.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Terry and Diane Mahrt of Kingsley; four grandchildren, Todd Mahrt and his wife, Kim, of Tayorsville, Ga., Tim Mahrt and his wife, Suzy, of Kingsley, Tami Mahrt and her special friend, Rick Schau, of Merrill, Iowa, and Travis Mahrt and his wife, Stacie, of Kingsley; and his great-grandchildren, Dexter, Dallin and DeAndra Mahrt, Brittany and Breanna Mahrt, Levi Mahrt and Kelsi and Jayden Wurth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jenny; and 11 brothers and sisters. He was then last one of George and Anna Mahrt's 12 children to pass away.
