Leonard E. Mackey, 76, of Sioux City died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Akron City Convalescent Care Center in Akron, Iowa.

Services will be 2 p.m. Friday at the Alfred Gilpin Building in Macy, Neb., with Mr. Rufus White officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Walthill, Neb. Visitation will be today and continue until service time Friday at the residence of Carroll Stabler in Macy. Arrangements are under the direction of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska.

Mr. Mackey was born May 30, 1925, in Niobrara, Neb., to Frank and Alice (Youker) Mackey. He married Eva McCauley on May 23, 1973. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from May 1942 until the summer of 1946, stationed aboard the USS Battleship Texas. He received a diploma from the Nebraska Indian Community College.

Mr. Mackey was known for many accomplishments, including being on the original 1934 Ponca Tribal membership roll. He was instrumental in the restoration of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska in the early 1970s. He was the Sioux City Indian Club president for eight years and the chief administrator of the Native American Alcohol Center. He was a member of the Tia-Piah Society. He was instrumental in the establishment of the War Eagle Monument in Sioux City.

He is survived by his wife, Eva; sons, Mike, Jim and Todd McCauley and Harvey Warner; an adopted son, Seann Mackey; as well as many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Terry McCauley; and brothers, Clifford, Elmer, Harold and Harry.
