MOVILLE, Iowa -- Paul F. Kunkel, 68, of Moville died Tuesday, June 28, 2005, at his residence following a brief illness with cancer.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Moville, with the Rev. Bert Burwell officiating. Burial will be in Arlington Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith McCulloch Chapel in Moville.
Paul was born June 9, 1937, in Remsen, Iowa, the son of Edward and Mary (Boever) Kunkel. He was raised in the Kingsley, Alton and Remsen, Iowa, area, where he received his education. He entered the military and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
He married Barbara Jean Popken on April 23, 1961. The couple lived in several towns in Iowa, Minnesota and Colorado until they settled in Moville in 1974. He had been a union carpenter, had his own welding shop and worked for John Morrell Co. for more than 25 years, just retiring three months ago.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, United Food and Commercial Workers Union 1142 and the Carpenters Union 948. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, playing cards and being outdoors. He was a man who always kept himself busy with projects around the home and helping his sons with their projects. He especially loved his family and the grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; four sons, Eddie and Bernice Kunkel of England, Mark and Julie Kunkel of Moville, Alan and Vivian Kunkel of Moville and David and Noelle Kunkel of Omaha; four grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; two great-stepgrandchildren; three sisters, LaVonne Fiedler of Remsen, Iowa, Lorna and Ronald Loutsch of Westfield, Iowa, and Pearl and Ray Cox of Thornton, Colo.; and a brother, Darrel and Vida Kunkel of Sioux City.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
