LE MARS, Iowa -- Elden Kounkel, 91, of Le Mars died suddenly Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton, Iowa, with the Rev. David Kottlowski officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Elden Arthur Kounkel was born Aug. 2, 1914, in Stanton Township, to William and Elizabeth (Erbes) Kounkel. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. He attended country school in Stanton Township.
He was united in marriage to Edna Casper on Nov. 24, 1937, at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Hinton, Iowa. He farmed in Plymouth County until his retirement in 1975.
He was a lifelong member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as an elder. Family was a very important part of his life. He enjoyed having his children and grandchildren return to Le Mars every year for the Plymouth County Fair.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Edna of Le Mars; four children, Gary Kounkel and his wife, Caroline of Loveland, Colo., and their children, Debbie Floyd and her husband, Joe, Julie Vernon and her husband, Ron, Suzanne Kounkel and Kristen Russell and her husband, Scott, Ron Kounkel of Le Mars and his special friend, Janice Ferrari, Rich Kounkel and his wife, Jan of Omaha and their children, Mark Kounkel and Jacqueline Kounkel, and Tom Kounkel and his wife, Patti of Omaha and their children, Ann Weaver, Nathan Kounkel, John Kounkel, Cody Hustak and Jade Hustak; and 10 great-grandchildren, Kailea, Mitch and Nick Kounkel, Matt and Trevor Floyd, Tate and Kyle Vernon, Lauren and Haley Russell and Christopher Thompson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elizabeth (Erbes) Kounkel; two brothers, Lloyd Kounkel and a brother in infancy; two sisters, Fern Grosenheider and Evelyn Stabe; two brothers-in-law, Lloyd Casper and Larry Ladenthin; and his mother and father-in-law, George and Elsie Casper.
Pallbearers will be Lamont Hageman, Gus Muecke, Bob Kounkel, Phil Schoenrock, Dave Howe and Matt Hoffman. Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
