ALTON, Iowa -- Leonard Joseph Konz, 88, of Alton died Thursday, June 30, 2005, at his residence following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, with the Revs. John Vakulskas Jr. and James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a St. Mary's Rosary Society rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 8 p.m., all at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, Iowa.

Mr. Konz was born Oct. 2, 1916, in Granville, Iowa, the son of Matthew and Anna (Mousel) Konz. He was raised in the Alton area and received his education at St. Mary's Academy in Alton.

On Sept. 23, 1941, he married Esther Arens at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, Iowa. They farmed in the Alton area until 1965, when they moved into Alton. He then operated the Champlin Service Station in Alton until about 1968. Shortly after, he managed the Co-op Gas and Oil in Alton until retiring in 1987.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton and the Knights of Columbus in Remsen, Iowa. He enjoyed fishing, mowing the lawn, playing cards, playing Bingo, bowling and the "Sizzlin Seven". He especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, Esther, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Esther of Alton; two sons and their wives, Gary and Karen of Le Mars, Iowa, and Tony and Kelly of Alton; a daughter and her husband, Deb and Dennis Schmit of Alton; 10 grandchildren, Jason Konz and his wife, Gina, Jodi and her husband, Dave Moir, Laura and her husband, Josh Sievers, Jeff Konz, Chris Gianopoulos, Marisa Konz, Megan Schmit, Shane Schmit, Austin Schmit and Melissa Schmit; four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Alyssa and Madeline Konz and Drew Moir; three sisters, Verena Pottebaum and Marian Kinney both of Alton and Rose Wolf of Sioux City; nine sisters-in-law, Honey Konz of Hospers, Iowa, Phyllis Englert of Hills, Iowa, Helen Jaminet, Doris Arens, Mary C. Loutsch, Elvira Arens, Doris Wurth and Jane and her husband, Leander Konz, all of Remsen, Iowa, and Mary Ann Arens of Le Mars, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Marilyn Konz; three brothers, Magnus, LeRoy and Lester; a sister, Loretta Klein; four brothers-in-law, Edmund Pottebaum, Robert Kinney, Norbert Wolf and Martin Klein; and a sister-in-law, Valeria Alesch.

Pallbearers will be Jason and Jeff Konz, Chris Gianopoulos, Shane and Austin Schmit, Josh Sievers and Dave Moir.
