SIBLEY, Iowa -- Mary Kass, 86, of Sibley died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.

Services were held Tuesday, Dec. 23, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Sibley. The Rev. Clair Boes officiated. Burial was in St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Walton-Roste Funeral Home in Sibley.

Mary Augusta (Braun) Kass was born May 26, 1917, in Le Mars, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Catherine (Nepper) Braun. She grew up in Le Mars and attended St. Joseph's Catholic High School, graduating in 1935.

On Nov. 7, 1939, she was united in marriage to Greg Kass in Le Mars. The couple moved to Sibley. While in Sibley, Greg took over his brother's filling station after his brother died unexpectedly. She was a full-time homemaker. On March 19, 1987, Greg died, ending their marriage of 47 years. She continued to live in their home and kept busy with church and her family. In November 2003 she was diagnosed with bone cancer. She had been a patient at Osceola Community Hospital for the past two weeks.

She was an active member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, playing bridge, reading, crossword puzzles and taking vacations.

She is survived by four daughters and their husbands, Carol and Doug Mauch of Sibley, Claudia and Edward Agnes of Crystal Lake, Ill., Lynn and Mark Nicolai of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Kim and Steve Wick of Le Mars; 16 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Steve Ellerbroek of Sioux Falls; and a sister, Leona "Boots" Wicklow of New York, N.Y.

In addition to her husband, Greg, she was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Catherine; a daughter, Sandra Ellerbroek; five brothers; and five sisters.
