REV. PAUL WUEBBEN

REMSEN, Iowa—The Rev. Paul William Wuebben, 93, longtime Remsen pastor, died Sunday, Oct. 6, 1996, at Happy Siesta Nursing Home in Remsen following a lengthy illness.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Remsen with the Rev. Curtis Miller, bishop of Western Iowa Synod ELCA, the Rev. Myron Herzberg and the Rev. Craig Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Remsen City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Moeller Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Rev. Wuebben was born Aug. 27, 1903, in Eyota, Minn., the son of Paul and Ida (Wessell) Wuebben. He spent his boyhood in Eyota where his father and grandfather were ministers. He graduated from Eyota High School and attended Ellsworth (Minn.) Community College, Buena Vista College at Storm Lake, Drake University in Des Moines, and the University of Iowa. He came to Remsen in 1932 and was installed as pastor of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Jan. 19, 1933.

He married Vivian Recknagel Nov. 24, 1935, at St. Paul’s Church. He was pastor of St. Paul’s Church for 40 years, retiring June 24, 1973. He enjoyed fishing and bowling.

Rev. Wuebben was a well-known speaker in Northwest Iowa and served for many years as master of ceremonies for the local Knights of Columbus Brotherhood banquets. He received numerous awards including the 1975 Governor’s Leadership award from the Iowa Community Betterment Organization. He was honored as the Remsen Citizen of the Year in 1975. He entered Happy Siesta Nursing Home Dec. 7, 1993.

Survivors include his wife; a sister-in-law, Kay Wuebben of Iowa Falls, Iowa; two nieces, Mrs. Harold (Shirley) Lawton of Fairfield Bay, Ark., and Mrs. Bert Fleming of Rogers, Ark.

He was preceded in death by a son Paul Lane Wuebben; a brother, Dr. Martin Wuebben and two sisters, Margaret Maury and Susan Stringer.
