PAULLINA, Iowa -- Bonnie M. Ulven, 73, of Paullina died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at Baum-Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakdale Evangelical Free Church in rural Meriden, Iowa, with the Rev. Brad Jensen officiating. Burial will be at a later date. There will be no visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of Gaudian-Eldridge Funeral Home in Paullina.

Bonnie Mae Ulven, the daughter of Eric and Lillian (Clow) Stark, was born March 7, 1929, in Le Mars, Iowa. She attended Paullina schools and graduated from Paullina High School in 1947. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City, graduating in 1951. She went on to teach in Soldier, Iowa.

On June 7, 1953, she was united in marriage to Marvin Ulven at Oakdale Evangelical Free Church in rural Meriden. After their marriage, the couple settled on a farm in the Paullina area. She taught school in the Meriden School System from 1955 to 1957 and in 1960 began teaching in the Paullina School System. She taught both social studies and English at the Paullina Junior High and Senior High School, retiring in 1991. The couple were on the family farm until moving into Paullina in 1989. Their retirement years were spent in Paullina.

She was a member of Oakdale Evangelical Free Church, and a former member of the Paullina and later the South O'Brien School board. She had volunteered with the speech department at South O'Brien High School. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the American Colonists and the Friendship Study Club in Paullina. Bonnie was an avid reader and had served on the Regional Library board. She collected teddy bears and salt and pepper shakers.

Bonnie leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Marvin of Paullina; two sons, Mark and his wife, Debra Ulven of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Dr. Matthew Ulven of Swansea, Ill.; a daughter and her husband, Sara and Mark Salansky of Fairfield, Calif.; five grandchildren, Stephen and Sean Salansky and Alexandra, Allison and Nicholas Ulven; a sister, Betty Olson of rural Primghar, Iowa; and a host of other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Karen, and her parents.
