AKRON, Iowa -- Ivyl Winfield Small, 80, of Akron died Sunday, Dec. 8, 2002, in Akron.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, with the Rev. Sonja Brucklacher officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Hoschler Post 186. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Ivyl Small was born Feb. 13, 1922, in Akron, the son of Avery and Grace (Stinton) Small. He attended school in Akron and was a lifelong Akron resident.
He married Phyllis Albright on Jan. 18, 1944, in Brunsville, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in the European Theater from Nov. 25, 1942, to Oct. 24, 1945. His awards and decorations include the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with five Bronze Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and three Overseas Bars.
He was employed by the State Highway maintenance as a foreman for 20 years. Following his employment by the state, he was employed by Akron Power and Light, where he worked as an engineer for 11 years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 186, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 915 and the 5th Armored Division Association.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis of Akron; two daughters, Diane and her husband, Stan Knapp of Lincoln, Neb., and Terri Small of Minnetonka, Minn.; four grandchildren, Mitch Knapp of Lincoln, Maggie and her husband, Scott Hoff of Lincoln, Heather Small of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Tiffany and her husband, Jeff Brandt of Hawarden, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Paige Hoff of Lincoln, and Cole and Ashley Brandt, both of Winnebago, Neb.; two sisters, Vernice Blum of Sioux City, and Ramona Govig of Atlantic, Iowa; eight brothers and their wives, Kenneth and Evelyn Small, Eldon and Jo Small, James and Edith Small and Gayland and Selma Small, all of Akron, Clayton and Marilyn Small of Sioux City, Roscoe and Evelyn Small of Le Mars, Iowa, Clinton and Kathleen Small of Dunlap, Iowa, and Fay and Burma Small of Borger, Texas; two sisters-in-law, Claudia Small of South Sioux City, and Marilyn and her husband, Cliff Wheeldon of Aberdeen, S.D.; and two brothers-in-law and their wives, Art and
Reva Albright of Le Mars, and Marlin and Carol Albright of Brunsville, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis Small; two sisters, Wilma Baldwin and Karen Small; and two brothers, Vernard and Arvel Small.
