John S. Sheehan, 70, of Sioux City died Friday, May 2, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital following a sudden illness.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Asbill of First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

John S. Sheehan was born Dec. 30, 1932, in Le Mars, Iowa, the son of John R. and Loretta (Laddusaw) Sheehan. The family moved to Sioux City shortly thereafter. He attended school in Sioux City and graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1951. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953, serving in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1955. He took courses in refrigeration engineering in Sioux City.

He married Susan (Miles) Henderson in August 1978. She passed away April 24, 1998, in Sioux City. He worked for 35 years at Swift's Packing Company. Later, he worked for the city of Sioux City for 10 years as a refrigeration engineer at the Sioux City Auditorium. He retired in 1997.

He was a former president of the Woodbury County Labor Council. He was a member of the Meatpackers Union in Sioux City. He also ran for a seat as a Democrat in the Iowa State Senate. He was a very proud, lifelong Democrat. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Larry "L.D." and Stacie Henderson of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Michele and John DiBerardino of Norwalk, Conn.; three sisters, Inez Myers, Lenice Reilly and her husband, Bernard, and Maryann Yates and her husband, Vernon, all of Sioux City; four grandchildren, Maxwell Henderson, Susannah DiBerardino, Alannah DiBerardino and Jace Henderson; and several other relatives.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Estill, Leo, Wayne, Gene and Jim.

Pallbearers will be Vernon John Yates, Kenny McWilliams, Paul Mersch, Ron Howard Jr., Chad Sheehan and Charlie Miles.
