John Herman Solomon, 105, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, at his residence.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Whitfield United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lee Williams officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Mr. Solomon was born Jan. 31, 1899, in a log cabin at McCook Lake, S.D., the son of James Madison and Alice Emily (Dickersen) Solomon. The family moved to Iowa and he attended Crescent Park School.

He married Elma Rebecca Craft on June 15, 1922, in Merrill, Iowa. She died Jan. 13, 1984, in Sioux City.

The couple farmed in Plymouth County, Iowa, and Jefferson, S.D., before moving to Sioux City in 1945. While in Plymouth County, he served as justice of the peace for Hancock Township. He went to work for Cudahy's Packing Co. as a guard until 1954. He then worked for Needham's Packing Co. until retiring in 1970, after 16 years with the company as the head watchman. He also measured land for the Soil Conservation Commission for many years.

He was a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church, the Men's Club and was very active in the church's peanut brittle fund raiser. He was a member of the Eagles Club of Sioux City and Woodman of the World. His hobbies included, playing baseball, gardening and dancing. He operated some dance halls in the area including, Alpine Pavilion and the Sloan Park Pavilion.

Survivors include his children, Charles Solomon, Edna and her husband, John Mathews, Darwin Solomon and his wife, Emaline and Joyce and her husband, Lyle Henkel, all of Sioux City; 21 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elma Rebecca Solomon; two sons, Donald Harold Solomon in infancy and Darrell Eugene Solomon; a sister; eight brothers; and a great-granddaughter, Cassie.

Memorials may be directed to Whitfield United Methodist Church.
