Rachel B. Schultz, 94, of Muscatine, Iowa, formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, May 10, 2004, at Unity Hospital in Muscatine at a result of pneumonia and congestive heart failure.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at First Assembly of God in Sioux City, with her grandson, the Rev. Michael E. Bales officiating. Burial will be in Stanton Township Cemetery, Merrill, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 8:30 p.m. today at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel.

Rachel was born June 23, 1909, in Mount Ayr, Iowa, the daughter of the Rev. Walter and Maude (Foster) McKinley. Since her father was a minister, the family moved around to several Iowa towns as she was growing up. She attended Westmar College and Iowa State Teachers College, receiving her degree in education. She later received her master's degree from the University of South Dakota. She taught school at Liberty Consolidated School near Merrill, Iowa and then three years at Little Rock, Iowa.

She was married to William F. Schultz on June 2, 1931, in Merrill. He died in 1941, in Le Mars, Iowa. She moved to the Sioux City area in 1945. She started teaching school at Crescent Park Elementary School and later moved to East Junior High School. She retired in 1974, but continued to substitute teach for another 10 years. In 1989, she moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and last November, she moved to Muscatine with her granddaughter.

She was a member of First Assembly of God and was very active in all the church work. She had been the church librarian and Sunday School superintendent for many years. She was also part of the visitation team that visited shut-ins and nursing home residents.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna M. Hardy of Springfield, Mo.; nine grandchildren and their spouses, the Rev. Dick and Pat Hardy of Springfield, Mo., Nancy and Martin Burhans of Dallas, Texas, the Rev. Susan and the Rev. Michael Bales of Muscatine, Kathie and Martin Boyce of Folsum, Calif., Sheri and the Rev. Dan Schaffer of Springfield, Mo., Jeff and Laura Schultz of Bloomfield, Colo., Clifford "Chip" and Jeri Schultz of Sioux City, Kristen and Craig Russell of Victorville, Calif., and Heather and Chris Hunter of Hesperia, Calif.; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, the Rev. Paul and Leola McKinley of Fort Dodge, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Richard and Clifford; a daughter, Mary Pangborn; and two sisters, Alda Schuler and Mary Hodgson.

The family requests memorials be directed to First Assembly of God.
