Verna M. Sandusky, 93, of Sioux City died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Taylor Hospice House in Des Moines, Iowa.

Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Westlawn Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Emory Van Gerpen officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Verna was born Dec. 30, 1910 in Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of John and Minnie (Barth) Kalas. She moved to Sioux City as a child and graduated from Central High School.

She married Lowell Sandusky on June 1, 1929 in Sioux City. She worked in the School Lunch Program for West Junior High School and other Sioux City Schools.

She was a member of Westlawn Presbyterian Church. Mr. Sandusky died on April 12, 1977 in Sioux City. She moved to Des Moines in 2001.

She is survived by three sons, Carl and his wife Shirlee Sandusky of Denver, Colo., Vern and his wife, Paula Sandusky of Vacaville, Calif. and Alan Sandusky of Sioux City; a daughter, Marilyn Keairns of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Craig Sandusky, Donald Keairns and his wife, Mitzi, Amy and her husband, Greg Van Zandt, Kattie and her husband, Michael Donoven, John and his wife, Dinah Sandusky, Robert and his wife, Jaqui Sandusky and Rebecca and her husband, Jeremy Arendt; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Beatrice Cole of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.; and a brother, Rev. J. Ellsworth and his wife, Janet Kalas of Lexington, Ky.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and two sisters, Dorothy Christy and Phyllis Martin.

Pallbearers will be Donald Keairns, Greg Van Zandt, John Sandusky, Robert Sandusky, Kattie Donoven and Stephanie Solman.
