REMSEN, Iowa -- James Schumacher, 70, of Le Mars, Iowa, formerly of Remsen, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Craig Miller officiating. Burial will be in Remsen City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars.
James Edward Schumacher was born Jan. 19, 1934, in Remsen, the son of Carl and Emma (Haack) Schumacher. He was raised in Remsen and graduated from Remsen High School.
He was united in marriage to Shirley Pearson on Aug. 21, 1955, in Marcus, Iowa. The couple made their home in Remsen, where he worked with his brother as an electrical contractor in the family business, BECO. He later went to work for the Remsen Municipal Utilities and retired in 1997. He was very mechanically gifted, he was known to his family as the "fixer". Upon his retirement, the couple moved to Le Mars to be closer to their grandchildren, Chantel and Ericka.
Family was of utmost importance to him. The couple have been longtime members of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Remsen.
Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Shirley of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Jamie and Steve Cockburn of Le Mars; two grandchildren, Chantel and Ericka; a sister, Eva Jane Letsche of Cherokee, Iowa; two brothers, Robert Schumacher of Remsen and Paul Schumacher and his wife, Eva of Mapleton, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Emma (Haack) Schumacher; and a brother, Dan Schumacher.
Pallbearers will be Phil Letsche, Robert Schumacher Jr., Bryan Klingbeil, Dale Mathey, Mitch Sitzmann and Scott Petty.
