LE MARS, Iowa -- Virgil D. Schramm, 72, of Le Mars passed away Friday, Aug. 12, 2005, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Sweet Sixteen Lanes (515 Seventh Avenue SW) in Le Mars, with the Rev. Jason Larson of United Methodist Church in Le Mars officiating. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Virgil Dean Schramm was born March 3, 1933, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Louis Clause and Leah Katherine (Sievers) Schramm. He was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church in rural Storm Lake and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. He was raised and educated in Storm Lake and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1951. Following graduation, he was employed with Iowa Public Service.

On Aug. 4, 1953, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He attained the rank of corporal prior to his honorable discharge on May 27, 1955. He returned to Storm Lake and his job with IPS. He then became employed with AMF and serviced bowling equipment throughout the United States.

On Aug. 30, 1958, he and Kay Rasmus were united in marriage in Benson, Neb. They made their home in Sioux City for a brief time. The couple lived in Des Moines, East St. Louis, Ill., and Storm Lake, where he managed bowling lanes. In 1969, Kay's mother, Vera Roberson, purchased part of Sweet Sixteen Lanes in Le Mars. He and his family moved to Le Mars to manage the business and would later become business partners. He retired in 2004 due to his failing health.

He was a member of the Bowling Proprietors Association of America and the Iowa Bowling Proprietors Association. He was one of the first bowlers in Iowa to maintain a 200 average and was on one of the first teams to average 1000. Apart of work and bowling, he loved all types of music and using his computer.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Kay of Le Mars; a daughter, Nadine Schramm of Ponder, Texas; a son and his wife, Gregory and Diana Schramm of Ada, Mich.; a daughter and her special friend, Leisha Schramm and Alan Phillips of Le Mars; three grandchildren, Katelin, Kristen and Braydon; and two sisters, Ramona Smith of Ajo, Ariz., and Carolyn and her husband, Ronald Hinners of Storm Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and her husband, Betty and Earl Fritz; a brother and his wife, Lowell and Juanita Schramm; his mother-in-law, Vera Roberson; and a brother-in-law, John Smith.
