CLAIMED BY DEATH
Five weeks ago Mrs. George H. Koenig and her daughter, Mrs. Martha Winter, who have been living in Waterloo for the past 10 years, arrived in Plymouth county to spend the summer months as usual with relatives and friends. Several days after their arrival Mrs. Koenig had the misfortune to fracture her leg and was taken to the Sacred Heart hospital, LeMars, at which place she received the best care for the past five weeks. Because of her advanced age, she was unable to stand the shock and passed away last week Tuesday evening surrounded by her loved ones.
Mrs. Koenig, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Goetze, was born March 8, 1856, at Baltimore, Md., where she grew to young womanhood. She was united in marriage to George H. Koenig in 1875. They moved from Baltimore to Harrisburg, Pa., where they lived for several years. In the year 1882, they moved to LeMars where they lived practically all of their lives. Her husband preceded her in death 34 years ago. An infant son also preceded her in death.
Mrs. Koenig lived a beautiful Christian life. She was a devoted mother and loved her friends. In her younger years, she went about doing deeds of kindness among the sick and sorrowing. She joined the Evangelical church in Baltimore, Md., when still a child and was a charter member of the LeMars Evangelical church and Woman’s Missionary Society. Because of her radiant spirit and alert mind, even at her advanced age, she was still able to enjoy visits with her friends.
She leaves to mourn her death, one brother, Rev. August Goetze of Covina, Calif.; one son, George W. Koenig, of LeMars; four daughters, Mrs. Karl Kaupp and Mrs. Grover Schneider of Merrill; Mrs. Martha Winter and Mrs. Scott Stauffacher of Waterloo, Iowa; one granddaughter, Mrs. Morse Hoorneman of LeMars; five grandsons, Homer Kaupp and Kenneth Kaupp of Des Moines; Dwight Schneider of Merrill, Robert Winter and Robert Koenig of LeMars; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were held at LeMars at the home of her son, George W. Koenig Friday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock and at Hildreth Memorial church at 2 o’clock, in charge of Rev. G.O. Thompson.
