September 11, 2001LE MARS, Iowa -- Wallace R. "Wally" Tentinger, 78, of Le Mars, former longtime Merrill-area farmer, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Andrew Hoffman officiating, and the Revs. Robert J. Waters and Richard Ries concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Ellendale, rural Merrill, with military honors conducted by American Legion Wasmar Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Wallace Robert Tentinger was born May 24, 1923, in Le Mars, the son of Raymond and Kathryn Ann (Hoss) Tentinger. He was raised and educated in Le Mars. He graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic School in Le Mars, and attended Trinity College in Sioux City. He served with the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, and serving overseas in Guam, Saipan and Okinawa. He married Dorothy Plendl on Dec. 3, 1943, at Fresno, Calif.
Following his discharge from active duty, the couple made their home on a farm near Adaville. After farming for several years, they moved to a farm west of Merrill and farmed for many years. While farming, he also drove trucks for various area trucking firms. In 1991, the couple moved to Le Mars.
Mr. Tentinger was a member of the American Legion Wasmar Post 241.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Le Mars; three daughters and their husbands, Marcia and Kelly Fried of Omaha, Ann and Mike Weiler of Olathe, Kan., and Margaret and Mark Nieman of Le Mars; four sons and their wives, Mark and Rosalie Tentinger of Waterloo, Iowa, Robert and Kathy Tentinger of Aurora, Ill., Bruce and Kathy Tentinger of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Jim and Melanie Tentinger of Merrill; 24 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Gordon Tentinger and his wife, Maureen of Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lorraine; two sons, Ross Tentinger and Gary Tentinger; and a grandchild.
