Clarence J. Schroeder, 99, of Le Mars, died Friday, April 7, 2006, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Clarence J. Schroeder was born Dec. 23, 1906, at rural Remsen, the son of John and Mary (Loutsch) Schroeder.

Clarence was raised on a farm southeast of Remsen and was baptized and confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. He received his education in both the rural school system and St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. On Feb. 5, 1930, he married Florence Warborg at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. They farmed southeast of Remsen until 1936 when they moved to a farm south of Oyens. They continued to farm there until December 2000 when they retired and moved to Park Place Estates in Le Mars. Clarence was currently residing at Good Samaritan Village (Brentwood Center) in Le Mars.

Agriculture was a very important part of his life. He saw many changes in agriculture from starting to farm with horses to using the most modern machinery and practices available. He loved to work in his shop making many windmills, trellis', hall trees, picnic tables, restoring old farm equipment and doing many of his own repairs and updates to equipment. He loved his family and was an avid pinochle player, always ready to play a game with his children and grandchildren. Clarence and Florence also enjoyed square dancing for many years.

He was a member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens since 1936 and a 50-year charter member of St. Mary's Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Catherine's Columbus Club. He was president and director of the Farmers Savings Bank in Remsen until the year 2000. He was also a trustee and clerk of Marion Township and a Marion Township Country School Board director for 20 years. He served on the boards of the Oyens Elevator, Plymouth County Extension Council, Farm Bureau, Plymouth Farmers Mutual Insurance, FHA, Big-4-Sheldon, Rural Electric Co-op and Plymouth County Election Board. He was on the building committee for St. Catherine's School in Oyens. Clarence was a charter member of the Plymouth County Zoning Board. He was also honored with the Service to Agriculture Award given by the Farm Bureau of Plymouth County.

Survivors include his wife, Florence of Le Mars; four sons and their wives, Darrel and Cloette, Mark and Jeannette, all of Le Mars, Lyle and Phyllis of Granville, and Bill and Janys of Kingsley; two daughters and their husbands, Doris and Bob Gengler and Betty and Dick Homan, all of Remsen; 27) grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 69 great-grandchildren; one brother, LeRoy and his wife, Maureen of Remsen; one sister, Jeanette Ricke and her husband, Clarence of Remsen; five sisters-in-law, Florence Schroeder, Joan Schroeder, Valeria Schroeder and Loretta Harpenau, all of Remsen, and Louise Beck of Sacramento, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Marjorie in infancy; one daughter-in-law, Marge Schroeder; one granddaughter, Sharon Schroeder; two great-grandsons, Jared and Robert Schroeder; four brothers, Ray and his wife, Virginia, Elmer and his wife, Hildegarde, Dominic, and Vernon; one sister, Helen Keffeler and her husband, Alfred; two brothers-in-law, Joe Niehus and his wife, Rose, and Anthony Harpenau; three sisters-in-law, Anna Bunkers and her husband, Theodore, Kate and her husband, Dominic Loutsch, Clara and her husband, Jack Loutsch.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson, officiating with concelebrants Msgr. Nicholas J. Ruba and the Rev. Eugene Murray. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call any time after 2 p.m. today (Monday) at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be Ken Gengler, Luke Homan, Greg Schroeder, Roger Schroeder, Stephen Schroeder and Tony Schroeder.

Knights of Columbus honorary bearers will be Richard Boever, Gerald Harpenau, Alan and Paul Loutsch, Wayne Pottebaum and Philip Schroeder.
