Succumbs After Several Months Illness To Brain AilmentDeath claimed Samuel Hemphill of Merrill Sunday evening, July 25, at the Cherokee State Hospital following an illness of seven months. Mr. Hemphill had enjoyed perfect health until the first of the year when he was afflicted with a heart ailment and has not been well since that time.
Samuel Irvin Hemphill was born September 29, 1878, at Center Point, Linn county, Iowa. He was married November 20, 1901, at Moville to Mary Parker, who survives him with one daughter, Mrs. Matt Levins, LeMars; three sons, C.R. Hemphill of Atlantic, Iowa, Wallace Hemphill, LeMars, Pvt. Gerald Hemphill who is stationed at Ft. Custer, Michigan; and three grandchildren, Jeannine and Merlin Hemphill of LeMars, and Billy Hemphill of Atlantic, also one sister, Miss Ida E. Hemphill, of Sioux City.
Mr. Hemphill had spent most of his life in Woodbury and Plymouth counties, and was manager of the Pew company’s store in Merrill for 31 years. He was a member of Merrill city council and also a fireman for a number of years. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World and the Odd Fellows.
The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Methodist church in Merrill, Rev. Kirby officiating. Until the afternoon of the funeral, the body will be at the Wiltgen Funeral Home in LeMars. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery in Sioux City.
