Ervin Staab, 92, of Remsen, died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.
Ervin Staab was born June 13, 1916, at rural Remsen, the son of Joseph and Regina (Sudtelgte) Staab. Ervin was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at St. Mary Catholic School in Remsen. He then farmed with his father and brother, Roman, until he was drafted into the U.S. Army on May 28, 1942. He completed his basic training at Camp Walters, Texas and later was transferred to Fort Carson, Colo. In January 1943 he was stationed at Scofield Barracks in Hawaii. He came home to the mainland, on the battleship West Virginia, and was honorably discharged Nov. 19, 1945.
He began farming in 1946 and in 1948 purchased his first piece of land. On Sept. 6, 1950 he married Fern Miller at Remsen. They made their home near Remsen where they were engaged in farming. Fern entered Happy Siesta on June 6, 2005. Ervin continued to farm until he entered Happy Siesta on Jan. 18, 2008.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Catholic Order of Foresters all of Remsen. He enjoyed fishing and in his younger years bowling and hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Fern; four sons, Wayne, Wendell and wife Debra, Dean and Dale all of Remsen; five grandsons and their wives, Donald and Becky, Adam and Kim, Chris and Christine, Chad and Cheryl and Jesse and Jackie Staab; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Wiederholt and Doris Reilly both of Le Mars, and Rita Mary and her husband Edward Schaff of Eugene, Ore.; and one brother Roman and his wife Maxine of Remsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Elizabeth and her husband, Emil Schilmoeller; and three other brothers-in-law, Norbert Roder, Vitus Wiederholt and Donald Reilly.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and a rosary at 8 p.m. by the Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus, all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Casketbearers will be Donald, Adam, Chris, Chad, Jesse and Pat Staab.
Catholic Order of Forester honorary bearers will be James, Gerald, Joe, Mark and Russ Staab and Larry Galles. Members of the Knights of Columbus will also be honoary bearers.
