Helen D. Saienga, 85, of Story City, and formerly of the Le Mars area, died Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2008, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

Helen D. Saienga was born July 6, 1923, to Lloyd E. and Martha Delia (Beely) Mauer in Plymouth County, Iowa. She graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1943 and taught music and second and third grade students in Melvin Public Schools.

She and Emory Saienga were married Jan. 26, 1946. In 1950 they moved to rural Hinton, and farmed there until moving to an acreage near Le Mars, Iowa, in 1983. They moved from Le Mars to Story City in December 2007. Helen enjoyed music, playing the piano and organ, needlework, cooking, and writing letters to friends and family.

Helen is survived by her husband, Emory, of Story City; four sons, Richard and his wife Pat Saienga of Largo, Fla., Steven and his wife Judy Saienga of Lakeville, Minn., Gene and his wife Peg Saienga of Round Rock, Texas, and Scott and his wife Vicki Saienga of Story City; a daughter Susan and her husband Rich Jesuroga of Boulder, Colo.; three sisters, Dorothy Tammes of Le Mars, Ruth Schultz of Sioux City, and Carol Strope of Boise, Idaho; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Robert Mauer; and two sisters, Eloise Meadows and Jane Mauer.

"Helen looked forward to meeting her mother who died in childbirth when Helen was born. I feel she has been rewarded by meeting God and being reunited with her mother after 85 years," relates Emory

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service. A private burial will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8 at Baker Township Cemetery near Melvin.
