ROCK RAPIDS – Russell Null, 78, of Rock Rapids and formerly of Le Mars, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1993, at Lyon Manor Care Center, Rock Rapids.
Russell Edgar Null was born June 21, 1915, at Beresford, S.D., the son of Albert and Grace (McDougall) Null. He grew up in Le Mars, graduated from Le Mars High School and later earned his bachelor of arts degree from Western Union College in Le Mars.
He married Esther Raveling at Remsen on Aug. 27, 1939. He was a teacher and coach at Modale, Boyden, Aurelia and Harlan. In 1959, the couple moved to Early where Mr. Null operated the Sac City Hatchery and sold Purina Feeds before moving to Le Mars later in the same year. He continued in the feed business.
Mr. and Mrs. Null retired to Mesa, Ariz., in 1986, where they lived until Mrs. Null’s death on May 25, 1990. Mr. Null suffered a severe stroke just before his wife died. After her death, he returned to northwest Iowa, first at Friendship Village, Inwood, and later at Rock Rapids.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Roger and Sharon of Wentzville, Mo., and Richard and Jan of Rock Rapids; two grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer; two great-grandchildren, Allison and Nichole; four sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Marian) Thunhorst of St. Paul, Minn., Ruby Lamb of Raleigh, N.C., Mrs. William (Alberta)Hodam of Des Moines and Mrs. Richard (Jean) Vogt of Aurelia.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Gracie Ruden, and two brothers, Richard and Delbert.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars with Rev. William E. Postel officiating. Burial will be in Le Mars Memorial Cemetery. Visitation is from 3:30 to 5 p.m. today (Friday) at Roste Funeral Home, Rock Rapids, and 7:30 to 9 p.m. today at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
