Mrs. Emma Dean Is Dead at Age 97

Mrs. Emma Dean, 97, one of the oldest residents of Le Mars, died early Saturday morning at a Le Mars nursing home. Death was due to a light stroke and an attack of flu.

Mrs. Dean, eldest daughter of Henry and Margaret Manz Steffen, was born in Chicago, March 4, 1866. Three years later, in 1869, her parents moved to Iowa and Plymouth county. They homesteaded where the town of Merrill is now located

She received her education in the public schools, later attending LeMars Normal school (now Westmar college.)

Her marriage to Frank Dean took place April 18, 1888, in Le Mars. Mr. Dean was a carpenter. and also farmed. He died in 1943.

Mrs. Dean was a member of United Church of Christ, Senior Women’s guild, Sunshine club and W.C.TU.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ruth Robertson of Le Mars, and Mrs. Helen Nichol of Ganada Mission. Ariz.: a son Howard F. Dean and a brother Henry of Vacaville, Calif.: six grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

One daughter Esther died in 1909. A sister and two brothers also preceded her in death.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Mauer Funeral home with Rev. Chas. Kruse officiating. Burial will be in Le Mars Memorial cemetery.
