John D. Van Wyk

IRETON, Iowa -- John D. Van Wyk, 63, of rural Ireton died suddenly Tuesday, July 5, 2005, at Sioux Center Community Hospital in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Ireton, with the Rev. Jeff Swanson officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Bertram Post 276. Visitation will begin at noon today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Porter Funeral Home in Ireton.
John D. Van Wyk was born Dec. 10, 1941, in Sioux Center, Iowa, the son of Dick and Alice (Rozeboom) Van Wyk. He attended rural schools and served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, serving from March 1964 to 1966.
He married Betty Hoffman on July 1, 1967, in Akron, Iowa. They farmed and lived near Hawarden, Iowa for 24 years, where he was employed at Lambertson Elevator from 1977 to 1988. In June 1988, he began working for the Ireton Co-op Gas and Oil, where he drove a gas truck. They moved near Ireton in 1991.
He was a member of the American Legion Bertram Post 276 of Ireton. He and his sons restored International-Farmall tractors and enjoyed collecting toy tractors. He also enjoyed NASCAR racing and time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Johnny and his wife, Selene of Alcester, S.D., and Pat of Ireton; a daughter and her husband, Julie and Dan Schipper of Ireton; a daughter-in-law, Michelle of Ireton; two brothers and their wives, Gerald and Genee and Stan and Lynette, all of Hawarden, Iowa; two sisters and their husbands, Diane and Dennis Ten Napel of Ireton and Deb and Ernie Gabel of Akron, Iowa; six grandchildren, Cody and Cade Van Wyk, Danna and Kendra Schipper and Holly and Tristan Van Wyk; three brothers-in-law and wives, Ken and Katherine Hoffman and Ray and Betty Hoffman, all of Westfield, Iowa and Don Hoffman of Akron, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Goldie Friske of Akron and Ida Searles of Westfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother, Kenneth Eugene; a son, Ken on July 18, 2003; his parents-in-law, Ray and Marie Hoffman; and three brothers-in-law, Gene Hoffman, Art Friske and Lloyd Searles.
