Viola A. Horsley

Viola A. Horsley, 91, of Armour, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Beverly Health Care Center in Armour.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Armour. Graveside services will be 4 p.m. Friday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Sioux City. Visitation will be 5 to 7:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Koehn Brothers Funeral Home in Armour.

Viola E.A. Horsley was born Aug. 1, 1912, in Akron, Iowa, to George and Anna (Utech) Frerichs. She was baptized in Merrill, Iowa, at St. John's Lutheran Church in 1913. She was confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Sioux City.

She married Howard Filmore Horsley on Jan. 25, 1932, in Elk Point, S.D. She lived in Sioux City until 1946, when they moved to Lawton, Iowa. They farmed in Lawton until 1949, then farmed in Luton, Iowa. She moved back to Sioux City in 1956. She worked at Aalfs Manufacturing in Sioux City for 18 years, retiring in 1977 at the age of 65.

She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church and Calvary Lutheran Ladies Aid in Leeds. She transferred to Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Dakota Dunes, then to Redeemer Lutheran Church in Armour. She was known for her home-made bread, her smile and the love she had for her family.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Marlin K. and Bonita Horsley and Loren G. and Delores Horsley of, all of Armour; two daughters and their husbands, Yvonne J. and LeRoy Pedersen of Sioux City and Karen A. and James Karr of Armour; two sisters, Edith Domnisse of Sioux City and Corrine Laycheck of Colorado; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers, John and Alfred; three sisters, Fern Betsworth, Leona Ebmeier and Ella Melton; and a grandson, Clint Pedersen.
