HAWARDEN, Iowa -- Clarence "Red" Horton, 83, of Hawarden died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, at Akron City Convalescent Care Center in Akron, Iowa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Hawarden, with the Rev. Tim Walker officiating. Burial will be in Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after noon today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Clarence "Red" Horton was born Feb. 29, 1920, on a farm near Bronson, Iowa, the son of Walter and Helen (Moyes) Horton. They moved to Akron in 1937. He helped his dad farm prior to his marriage to Arlene Plueger on Oct. 10, 1940, in Akron.
They farmed until 1954, when they moved to Centerville, S.D., where he and his brother, Art, operated the John Deere Implement Co. for three years. They moved back to Hawarden and farmed southeast of town until moving into town in 1974. He worked for Heldt and Peterson Implement until retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene; seven children, Shirley Nelson of Elk Point, S.D., Patty Torgerson of Phoenix, Ariz., Rich and Paula Horton of Hurley, S.D., Rose and Tom Gereau of Weslaco, Texas, Karel and Verlyn Dekkers of Hawarden, Mary Horton of Sioux City and Tammy Horton of Hawarden; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-stepgrandchildren; three brothers, Wayne and Betty Horton of Le Mars, Iowa, Glen Horton of Sioux City and Cecil and Corriene Horton of Akron, Iowa; a sister, Dorothy and Emeral Oloff of Bettendorf, Iowa; and a sister-in-law, Fern (Mrs. Art Horton) of Pipestone, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Art.
